WORDSWORTH, William ("Father of Romanticism)

William Wordsworth was rightfully considered "the father of romanticism."  Becoming one of the most inspirational and important writers in England, it's no question that his role in the Romantic era was huge.  Others refer to Wordsworth as "natures priest" or the "pope of romance," through his constant dealing with joy and beauty of nature and how it can teach humans about life.  Nature played the role of his religion in many ways as well, "For Wordsworth, nature is a kind of religion in which he has the utmost faith" (Gradesaver).  Wordsworth really captured his "naturism" approach in his poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"  The poem, being written about the beauty of nature, describes how nature can create an understanding of life, "And then my heart with pleasure fills, / And dances with the daffodils" (25).  Here, we can see how Wordsworth demonstrates the idea that, once one understands nature, they understand life.  Wordsworth was also very much a believer that he was put here to teach people with his works of art.  He wanted readers of his work to learn about life, beauty, and death.  He interpreted many things, such as the idea that humans need to find themselves.  Because of Wordsworth's spread of romanticism to America, the movement became way bigger.  More poets, and artists derived from his spread of the movement and were inspired to create due to his work.  The video below shows more about Romanticism and the role of William Wordsworth during the time.  The documentary also includes clips of some of his greatest and popular poems.
